A Work of the Trinity

The amazing thing about the “living and active” Word of God is that it just keeps speaking.  I’ve written, preached, taught, and prayed Ephesians 3:14-19 for months now, but just the other day a word jumped out at me…I was praying these words, “that according to the riches of His glory He may grant you to be strengthened.”

I went back and saw that He was talking about the Father…that the Father would grant something, and then the next line says, “grant you to be strengthened with power through His Spirit.”  Paul is praying for the Father to grant us to be strengthened by His Spirit.  And then the next line, “so that Christ may dwell in your hearts…”

The Father must grant, the Spirit must strengthen, and the Son must dwell…we indeed have a trinitarian salvation.  JI Packer said, “Salvation is thus the threefold activity of the triune God.”  The Father planned everything and grants the work to take place.  The Son became a man in order to die in our place, rise, and reign for us, and will one day come again to take us to be where He is.  And the Spirit, “the self-effacing divine executive who engineered creation and now engineers the new creation, has been at work since Pentecost imparting to believers their first installment of heaven’s life in and with their Savior.” (Rediscovering Holiness, page 45)

Ask the Father to grant it, ask the Spirit to empower you, and ask Jesus to come and be at home in you as you learn to be at home in Him…that takes the Spirit’s power too!
