Eternal Things

Last week I was following the M’Cheyne Reading Plan and came to Joshua 14.  At the end of that chapter, we are re-introduced to Caleb.  But at the end of the chapter there was an obscure mention of someone, “It had been named after Arba, a great hero of the descendants of Anak.” (14:15 NLT)

I have no great insight into Arba, but I sat back and thought about him.  He was famous enough at one time to have had a land named after him, but now, we know nothing about him.  He was once among the greatest of the Anakites, who are often thought of as giants, but we know nothing about him.

From time to time, I look at the pictures of the pastors from FBC’s past.  I knew two of them and some of our older members knew a few more, but there are those who stood in the pulpit of a church founded in 1903 that no one currently attending knows today.

What’s my point?  It’s simply this…one day, if Jesus tarries, we will all come to a place where our memory will be just that…a memory.  And a day is coming when even those memories will be gone.

I’m reminded of the saying, “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, only what is done for Christ will last.”  How much of what we do today will be remembered in eternity?  There are things I can do for the glory of God that will have eternal ramifications and things I can do that will be burned with the wood, hay, and stubble of my earthly works.

How about our prayer life?  How much of what we are praying for today has eternal implications?
