Keep in Step with the Spirit
Four verbs describing our Life in the Spirit…walk, led, live, and now in verse 25, “let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” Some translations repeat the word from verse 16 and say walk, but that is unfortunate…the word is different.
The word here in verse 25 means to walk in step, it is a military term for marching in rank. Soldiers line up, the drill instructor gives the order, and they march. They don’t worry about where, they don’t worry about why, they just march…not one step out of cadence.
Every single day the Holy Spirit will lead us, He will guide us, and direct us as we walk in Him. Jesus spoke of how He lived His life in John 5:19…He said, I can do nothing on my own accord, but whatever I see the Father doing…that’s what I do. That’s the key to our walking in the Spirit. WE must learn to listen to Him.
It is really all about rhythm…rhythm is vital to a golf swing, to strumming a guitar, to poetry, and it is vital to our Spiritual life. Following Jesus really isn’t about saying a prayer, coming to church, and having a daily quiet time.
Those things are important, but we can prayer a sinners pray, come to church an hour a week, and give 30 minutes a day to the Word of God every day and still live in the flesh.
How do we walk in the Spirit, how are we led by the Spirit, and how can we be led by Him? The key is to walk in step…moment by moment. Learn to seek Him before you speak, before you go, before you stop, before you do anything. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you hear His voice.
I’ll come back to this tomorrow!
