Deliver us from evil
Jesus’ Model Prayer is amazing. Today’s focus is, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Much like, “Your kingdom come,” is explained by “Your will be done,” the “Lead us not into temptation” is explained by “but deliver us from evil.”
The word “temptation” always carries a negative connotation in English, but it is a neutral word…it can be a test or a trap depending on how you react. So, Jesus is teaching us to pray that God would help us make steppingstones out of potential stumbling blocks.
If you go to James, you’ll find three different kinds of temptation. In James 1:2-3, we find testing that makes us stronger, and we should rejoice in it. In 1:13 you find temptation from the evil one and we are to flee from it. And in 4:7 we find a temptation that probably is what Jesus was talking about…James tells us to submit, resist, and to draw near.
We submit by surrendering our will to God as we seek to be holy.
We resist by using the Word of God as a sword.
We draw near as we submit and resist! When Jesus was tempted, He went to the Word of God and resisted. When we pray “Lead us not into temptation…” we are asking, “God, don’t let me fall into Satan’s trap—let me stand strong in you!” Trials are a means of growth, but what we are seeking is to never be in a place where we sin against God. We are asking Him to lead us, rescue us, and save us from the evil one.
This prayer teaches us a few things that are important to remember as we pray:
Frist, expect the trials. Jesus teaches us to pray every day about the trials we face. Expect them so you can be ready for them.
Second, know the real enemy. It isn’t pain or discomfort. Jesus focuses our attention on the real enemy…the evil one. Remember, if you seek comfort over righteousness, you will get neither, but if you seek righteousness over comfort, you will find the path to both!
Third, learn to see the test correctly. Process the test through the love of the Father.
Finally, when you face trials watch Jesus! Tempted in every way, but He did not sin. Draw near to Him and resist!
