Fullness

As we think about the common themes that run through Paul’s prayers, knowledge of God, empowerment to do what God has called us to do, and then we come to a theme that is beyond my ability to describe.  Let me just quote them:

“…which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Eph 1:21

“…that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.” Eph 3:19

“…filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”  Phil 1:11

“…we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will…”  Col 1:10

“…so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him…”  Col 1:11

I am floored by the enormity of what Paul is praying…the One who fills all in all is the One that fills us with all the fullness of God.

Surely CS Lewis was right when he said, “Our desires are not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

Spend some time this morning asking God to fill you with His fullness.
