Spiritual Rhythms

So, the issue of our Spiritual Life really is rhythm.  Islam requires five prayers a day.  In Malaysia you find places for those prayers throughout the city…the men and women simply work that rhythm into their lives.

Monks often pray seven time a day…the monastery schedules the entire day around those prayer times…they are a part of their rhythm.

The Jewish people of Jesus’ day would pray at least three times a day…those in Jerusalem would go to the Temple, those outside of the city would go to the Synagogue.  In Acts we see the disciples continuing this…Peter went up on the roof top to pray, they went to the Temple to pray…they kept the rhythm.

What’s the rhythm of your day?  Let me suggest there are at least five things we most likely do every day…get up, eat three meals, and go to bed.  Can we start there?

When you wake up, before you check your phone, pray!  Recite a passage you are memorizing, but before your feet hit the floor…pray.

Pray before you eat each meal…if you have time read a Psalm, or another passage, and spend time seeking God.

And then before you go to sleep…pray.  I can’t think of a better way to fall asleep than to do it praying!

That’s five times…add a devotion time, add time with a prayer journal, add time with your spouse or family, pray as you go to work and as you come back…suddenly you’ll find the goal of “praying without ceasing” more approachable.

The goal is to “check in” with the Spirit and to continue seeking Him every moment of the day.
