Daily Walk with Jesus

I’ve been taking some time off and trying to use this time to rest, but also to grow in my walk with Christ.  One of the things I’m trying to do is to continue my time with God after the time I spend with Him in the morning hours.  Typically, the first thing I do after pouring my coffee is to open my Bible and spend time with Him in His Word.  After reading the chapters for that day, I write out a prayer in a journal…the prayers almost always come from something that I read in that morning.  After writing out the prayer, I open my prayer journal and begin to pray.

Someone said our goal to treat prayer like a phone call in which we simply never hang up…I am seeking to walk with Him and talk to Him throughout the day…not just in the “prayer time.”

As I said yesterday, Frank Laubach really helped me.  I’ve read a couple of his books, but last week I went back and re-read his book The Game with Minutes.  His goal is to urge us to keep God in mind for at least one second of every minute of the day.  Easy to write, easy to say, but how in the world do we do it?

He gives a few practical examples.  When we sit to eat, remember the words of Jesus, “Eat this in remembrance of Me.”  Thank God for the food He provides and ask Him to feed your spirit as well as your body.

When we read, seek to keep a running conversation with God as you read.

When you are walking or driving, pray for those you come across.  Pray for those who sit around you at work.  As they talk to you, ask God for wisdom in what you should say or what you should not say.

What about the times you shower?  Can you thank God for the blood of Jesus that washes away our sin?  As you dress, can you ask God to help you walk in His armor that day?  As you wake up, ask the Lord to go with you, as you go to bed, ask God to help you evaluate your day and ask for forgiveness if there are unconfessed sins.  Go to sleep talking to Him.

I like to fall asleep working on the Scripture I’m memorizing.  It’s amazing that when I wake up in the middle of the night that my mind is still working on that passage.  When I wake up I often think of the verses I went o sleep thinking about…that’s the “and on His Law he mediates day and night” David spoke of in the Psalms.

Laubach says, “We develop what Thomas a Kempis calls a “familiar friendship with Jesus.” Our unseen Friend becomes dearer, closer, and more wonderful every day until at last we know Him as “Jesus, lover of my soul,” not only in song but in blissful experience. Doubts vanish; we are more sure of Him being with us than of anybody else. This warm, ardent friendship ripens rapidly, and it keeps on growing richer and more radiant every month.”

Work with it today…see if you can talk to God at least once every single waking hour.  It might be a simple, “Help me Lord,” or a “Thank you Jesus,” but check in and listen for Him all day.
