Prayer-Reading

In the last few weeks, I’ve been trying to take quotes from different books on prayer so that I can encourage you to pray more effectively and more frequently.  Obviously, I do not agree with every single thing the authors believe, but I can learn from people in all walks of theology…especially when it comes to praying.  I’ve found that I have to approach most Christian literature like I eat fish…I eat the meat and spit out the bones!

Read the following quote and see if it helps you as much as it helped me,

“As is the case with other forms of prayer, we will pray-read the Word much more if we schedule time for it. If we pray-read only when opportunity presents itself, then we will not do it nearly as much. While you are pray-reading the Word, I encourage you to speak:

✦  Slowly and softly (not shouting or preaching at the indwelling Spirit)
✦  Briefly (short phrases, not paragraphs)
✦  Minimally (listen more than talk)
✦  With many pauses (occasionally be silent)
✦  With gently sighing (Rom. 8:26) and praying in the Spirit (1 Cor. 14:2, 18)

Take time to linger in God’s presence and to speak affectionately to Him (intermittently say to God, “I love You”). And take time to journal—to record your thoughts and prayers as you pray-read through Scripture. Journaling will help you capture the truths the Holy Spirit gives you and develop language to talk with God. I try to always have my notepad or laptop with me in my prayer times so I can journal.”
