"All to the glory of God"

I saw a picture the other day of two beach chairs on the sand turned away from the water and thought about our life. It seems strange to me that the two chairs are turned away from the water…isn’t the purpose of coming to the beach to enjoy the gulf that is before us?  I know we go for other reasons, but would you really go down to the beach and turn your chair away from the water?

Why are we alive?  Why are we here on this earth at this time and in this place?  Are we working just so we can retire one day?  Are we going through life just to make it?  Or are we here for a greater purpose?

Paul took the very simple things…the things we do every day and turned them into something bigger.  “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10:31 ESV)

The Bible teaches us that we are here for the glory of God and our life’s purpose on earth is to see and make much of His beauty.  Living this life can be glorious even in the most mundane parts.  I don’t mean they are all the same, but when we learn to turn every activity into a time for conversation with God, when we learn to “pray without ceasing” everything becomes worship.

Brother Lawrence in the kitchen, moms holding a crying baby, dads changing diapers can be every bit as glorious as sitting in a cathedral singing with the Body of Christ.  How?  Every moment holy!  Every moment a prayer to God, every thought a conversation, every sight, every sound, every feeling…in His presence and in worship.

I wish I could tell you how to switch on the switch and suddenly find yourself enraptured with God’s beauty, but maybe the answer is to turn the chair of your life around toward Him, face Him, and learn to see His glory and beauty.  That will change you.
