Are you Spiritually Dry?
Have you ever reached the point that you are so hungry or thirsty that you feel you are going to pass out…you get to the true point of being famished. When you come to that point the answer is obvious…food or drink. Think of the times you’ve gulped down a glass of cold water or eaten food that just seems to melt in your mouth…it is almost like Heaven on earth.
Spiritually, I must do four things to stay nourished. (1) I must be in the Word daily, (2) I must pray, (3) I must be with other believers, and (4) I must be a disciple who makes disciples. It really is that simple.
I don’t have a choice when it comes to the Word. For me, it’s Monday, but Sunday’s coming. I live with the daily pressure of making sure I am in the Word because I know several hundred people will show up this Sunday expecting to be fed.
I also don’t have much of a choice when it comes to being with other Christians. My calling as pastor involves being with the people of God on a regular basis. In fact, if I am not careful, I will find that I am rarely with lost people. I must be intentional about being with those who are not in Church.
I have also built discipleship into my daily rhythm. I meet with a group of men each Tuesday morning, I meet with another group of men on Thursday, I meet with several individuals throughout the month, so discipleship is a part of my routine.
If I find myself spiritually dry is almost always because I’m not praying as I should. PT Forsyth said, “Prayer brings with it, as food does, a new sense of power and health. We are driven to it by hunger, and having eaten, we are refreshed and strengthened for the battle which even our physical life involves. For heart and flesh cry out for the living God. God’s gift is free; it is, therefore, a gift for our freedom, i.e. renewal to our moral strength, to what makes men of us.”
I realize your job, or weekly rhythms may remove you from more than just prayer…you may find yourself with lost people all the time, you may find it difficult to be in the Word, or to find time for discipleship, but you must make room for it…especially prayer and the Word. Spend time thinking over these four things and make room for them…you simple will spiritually dry up without them.
