Christlike in Prayer
Blaise Pascal, in the 1600s said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” I wonder what he would think today! One of the most remarkable things about Jesus’ life is that He only ministered publicly for three years, but in those three years He made prayer and time alone with the Father a priority.
After His baptism He spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting and praying.
He begins His ministry, heals many, He is in Simon and Andrew’s house and the house is filled with people, but ‘very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went to a desolate place and there He prayed.’
Luke simply says, “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray,” and then throughout his Gospel, he shows us Jesus in the desolate places.
He went out on to the mountain to pray all night before choosing the 12.
He prays alone before Peter confesses Him as the Christ.
He goes to the Mountain to pray when He was transfigured.
Before He teaches the Disciples the Lord’s Prayer, Luke 11 says “Jesus was praying in a certain place…”
He went with His disciples to pray in the wilderness after hearing of John’s death.
After feeding the 5000, he dismissed the crowds, sent the disciples out, and went to mountain to pray all night.
After the Lord’s Supper He went to the Garden and prayed all night.
So, Jesus prayed early prayed late, and He prayed for days and the beauty of it all is He is praying for us at the right hand of the Father. So, if I want to be Christlike there are many things I must do, but certainly prayer is a major part of that!
