Praying the Psalms

One of the best resources for prayer is the book of Psalms.  They are not only the Word of God, but the Psalms give us words to God.  I hope you make the Psalms a part of your daily life, but don’t just read them…they are written to be sung and to be prayed.  Someone else can write about singing them, but I want to show you an example of how to pray them.

Let’s start with an easy one…Psalm 1.  Open your Bible to Psalm 1 and follow along with me.

God, you say “blessed is the man,” well I’m a man and I desperately want to be blessed.  Help me to not walk in the counsel of the wicked.  I want to walk in your truth, and I know that there are many who would try to pull me aside…to get me off of the narrow road, so help me to walk in your truth and not in the counsel of the wicked.

((at this time I could also pray this for my children and grandchildren!))

I don’t want to walk with the wicked and I don’t want to stand in the way of sinners.  I know I am to be around them to share your light, but please don’t allow me to stand there so long that I become like them.  I want to stand in the righteousness you give me.  Will help me?

Go from there, but I hope you can see how easy it is to pray the Psalms.  Some are longer than others…pray a section that stands out to you.  Some are harder than others and maybe one doesn’t speak to you at this moment, but there are 150 of them…surely one will speak to you today.

It is the 15th…try reading Psalm 15, 45, 75, 105, and 135…let one of those speak to you and pray it back to God.
