Write it Down

In 1946 Flannery O’Connor began keeping a prayer journal. One day she poured out her heart and wrote these words,
“Dear God, I cannot love Thee the way I want to.  You are the slim crescent of a moon that I see and myself is the earth’s shadow that keeps me from seeing all the moon…what I am afraid of, dear God, is that my self shadow will grow so large that it blocks the whole moon, and that I will judge myself by the shadow that is nothing.  I do not know You God because I am in the way.”
I wish I journaled more than I do…there are times when I’m faithful and go for weeks, but there are other times when I simply don’t do it.  One thing I have found is that when I have a hard time verbally praying, writing out my prayers helps me sort out what I am trying to say and it helps me think through my requests.
If you are struggling to pray, if you find your mind wanders, then take a notebook and write it out.
