Do it again, God, do it again

I love the creativity of God.  G.K. Chesterton in his book, Orthodoxy, talked about the vitality of children, “They always say, ‘Do it again,’ and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead.”  He said, “Grown-up people are not strong to exult in monotony.”

I don’t see prayer as monotony, but sometimes it does seem to get repetitive and if we are not careful it can become boring.  I think the same is true in human relationships.  If we don’t “spice” it up from time to time we can get too comfortable, and the passion can grow cold.  Is it possible that we can grow cold in the things of God?

Before you answer, listen to Chesterton, “But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun, and every evening, “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we. The repetition in Nature may not be a mere recurrence; it may be a theatrical encore.”

That is an incredible thought!  To be honest, it just makes me happy to think that God is a “Do it again,” God and He never tires of me coming to Him…even if I keep coming with the same things.  My two grandsons can tell me the same “knock knock” jokes over and over again, but I will delight in it because of the laughter they share.

Maybe I don’t have to spice it up, maybe I just need to learn to see things from God’s eyes and learn to say, “Do it again!”  Maybe, I’m getting bored because I’ve lost the wonder of it all and as I watch the sun set tonight, I can think of tomorrow and say, “Do it again God! Do it again!”
