Delighting in his Word

I’ve been building a case that Psalm 1 is an outline for Psalm 119 and it is really obvious in the third stanza. We’ve seen the wicked, the sinner, and the scoffer, but let’s go back to the blessed man. “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scoffers, BUT his delight is in the law of the LORD and on His law he meditates day and night.”

We move from the wicked, the sinner, and the scoffer, to the psalmist’s delight, “Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.” Verse 165 says, “Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.”

The counselors and counsel of God’s Word should be our delight. It is there we learn to respond as He would have us respond…it is there we learn to love our enemies, to pray for those who persecute us, and to rejoice when we suffer…the world never counsels us that way, but God’s Word is true. It shows us the value of self-denial, of dying to self, and of taking up the cross and following Him.

Meditate on what God did in the lives of those who have gone before us…how the wicked plotted against Joseph and Daniel, and yet they remained faithful and God blessed their faithfulness. Meditate on what God did through Jesus and His disciples. Learn to come to the Word of God for everything.

Let’s not forget to turn to the Scriptures for the origin of the world,

Let’s turn to Scripture to find out how to bring up our children,

Let’s turn to Scripture to see how to invest God’s money,

Let’s turn to Scripture and learn to walk in this world and when we do we will find the abundant life Jesus promised…we will find His favor, His illumination, and His guidance.

One thing I have found helpful is to continually pray that God will give me a thirst for His Word and a hunger for it. When I find my hunger isn’t as it should be I ask God to help and He does. He delights in answering that prayer. Will you ask Him to help you delight in His Word?
