Made Holy By the Word

Last week we began our study of this incredible Psalm. In the first 8 verses, we saw the blameless or blessed man…today I want you to see the holy and pure man. Luther said this about our Psalm,

“In this Psalm David always says that he will speak, think, talk, hear, read day and night continually—but about nothing else than God’s Word and Commandments. For God wants to give you His Spirit only through the external Word.”

Jesus prayed that the Father would sanctify us in truth and then He said—Your word is truth. It is here, unlike any other place in the Bible, that we are taught that we cannot come to God unless we come through His Word. The Psalmist speaks about God in every single verseand in almost every verse he also speaks of God’s Word. Do not lose sight of what he says about God’s Word…in verse 9 it is ‘your Word,’ in verse 10 they are ‘your commandments,’ and in verse 12 they are ‘your statutes,’ and on he goes…this Word we study is God’s Word—these words are letters from Heaven speaking to us here on earth showing us how we can know our Creator.

In verses 1-8 we found the blessed man, the knowledgeable man, and the determined man.Here in verses 9-16, we find that same man committing himself to do two things.

First, in verses 9-12, we find a Commitment to Know.

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart, I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes!”

Let’s pick up here tomorrow, but let me close…how committed are you to knowing the Word of God? Do you read it? Do you study it? Do you memorize and meditate? Do you spend time reading other’s thoughts about it? How committed are we? Pick it up and read it and get to know its Author!
